The evidence and the science is clear that movement and exercise play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy body, especially as we age. The benefits of regular physical activity occur throughout life and are essential for healthy aging. Adults ages 65 years and older gain substantial health benefits from regular physical activity. The good news is it is never too late to start being physically active.
That is easier said than done, especially when movement can be difficult for any number of reasons. Our highly skilled physical therapists at Atlantis Physical and Occupational Therapy have years of experience working with seniors developing customized plans designed to increase movement and function for a more active lifestyle. We even have an comprehensive program addressing functional aging.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources in their 2nd Edition of Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans “approximately 80% of US adults and adolescents are insufficiently active. As a result, many Americans currently have or are likely to experience chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression. Regular physical activity can prevent and improve many of these chronic conditions.
The key to this finding is activity can improve many of these conditions, even among the senior population. More importantly, Medicare will pay for physical therapy for patients at risk of a fall. There is no time like the present, call us today to schedule an evaluation and discuss your situation.
Evaluation
All our patients start with a comprehensive evaluation in a private treatment room. First, we identify any physical limitations in order to have a complete picture of abilities and deficits. Then, we discuss your goals and what you want to accomplish. Some patients may just want to improve balance and gait training to avoid falling, others may want to reduce joint or back pain in order to increase daily activities and light sports, or rehab from surgery, while others may want to get back to an active lifestyle of running, tennis, or golf. Together, we will work to set up a plan to achieve success for you.
